A 300 IR sublingual tablet is an effective, safe treatment for house dust mite-induced allergic rhinitis: An international, double-blind, placebo-con…
2021
Background: Allergic rhinitis induced by house dust mites (HDMs) is a highly prevalent but often underdiagnosed and undertreated/untreated chronic disease. It often has a negative impact on sleep, work, leisure activities, and health-related quality of life. Allergen immunotherapy is a proven, safe treatment for respiratory allergies. Objective: We sought to assess the efficacy and safety of a 300 index of reactivity (IR) sublingual tablet formulation of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus:Dermatophagoides farinae 1:1 extract in adolescents (aged >_12) and adults with moderate to severe HDM-induced allergic rhinitis. Methods: In a phase III, international, double-blind, placebo controlled, rando…
Factors associated with nocturia-related quality of life in men with lower urinary tract symptoms and treated with tamsulosin oral controlled absorpt…
2020
Nocturia impairs quality of life (QoL). We have performed a non-interventional study in which men with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) were treated for at least 3 months with tamsulosin oral controlled absorption system (0.4 mg q.d.). Other than observing efficacy and tolerability of this drug formulation, the study was designed to explore the relative roles of number of nocturia episodes and of non-urological causes of nocturia on nocturia-related QoL at baseline and treatment-associated changes thereof. The study enrolled 5775 men seeking treatment of their LUTS. Tamsulosin improved LUTS, e.g. International Prostate Symptom Score from 19.5 +/- 5.9 to 10.1 +/- 4.9 (means +/- SD). This …
Clinical course of rhinitis and changes in vivo and in vitro of allergic parameters in elderly patients: a long-term follow-up study
2012
Changes in rhinitis symptom severity tend to decrease with aging, but whether the decrease is associated with allergic skin test reactivity, serum total and specific IgE, and nasal eosinophils or determined only by aging is poorly understood. The aim of the study was to analyze sensitivity in vivo and in vitro some 15 years after primary testing, skin prick test (SPT), serum total and specific IgE, ratio sIgE/tIgE, and nasal eosinophils in order to evaluate changes due to age and changes due to the severity of rhinitis symptoms. One hundred and eight rhinitis patients who had been investigated in 1995 were re-interviewed and their current allergy re-assessed after a follow-up of 15 years. A…
Hippocampal subfields predict positive symptoms in schizophrenia : First evidence from brain morphometry
2012
Alterations of hippocampal anatomy have been reported consistently in schizophrenia. Within the present study, we used FreeSurfer to determine hippocampal subfield volumes in 21 schizophrenic patients. A negative correlation between PANSS-positive symptom score and bilateral hippocampal subfield CA2/3 as well as CA1 volume was found on high-resolution magnetic resonance images. Our observation opens the gate for advanced investigation of the commonly reported hippocampal abnormalities in schizophrenia in terms of specific subfields.
Factors associated with efficacy of an ibuprofen/pseudoephedrine combination drug in pharmacy customers with common cold symptoms
2016
SummaryAim The aim of this study was to explore factors affecting efficacy of treatment of common cold symptoms with an over-the-counter ibuprofen/pseudoephedrine combination product. Methods Data from an anonymous survey among 1770 pharmacy customers purchasing the combination product for treatment of own common cold symptoms underwent post-hoc descriptive analysis. Scores of symptoms typically responsive to ibuprofen (headache, pharyngeal pain, joint pain and fever), typically responsive to pseudoephedrine (congested nose, congested sinus and runny nose), considered non-specific (sneezing, fatigue, dry cough, cough with expectoration) and comprising all 11 symptoms were analysed. Multiple…
Management of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia in southern Italy: a retrospective analysis of the Sicilian-Calabrian Society of Urology (SSCU…
2002
Introduction: The availability of new pharmacological and surgical options is responsible for important changes in the management of symptomatic benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). The Sicilian-Calabrian Society of Urology performed a retrospective survey to assess the management of BPH in southern Italy in 1997 and 1998. Patients and Methods: A 3-page questionnaire was sent to the 36 urological units of these two regions. The real number of patients treated was required. The numbers were checked with data obtained from the Health Regional Offices. Results: Twenty-six urological units (72.3%) replied. Almost all patients underwent urin…
Long-term urinary dysfunction after mesorectal excision: a prospective study with intraoperative electrophysiological confirmation of nerve preservat…
2006
Bladder dysfunctions are well-recognized complications after nerve-sparing mesorectal excision for rectal cancer. This study sought to symptomatically analyze the extent of recovery from major and minor urinary symptoms in patients with signs of bladder denervation.Sixty-two patients with mesorectal excision for rectal cancer were investigated prospectively. Pelvic autonomic nerve preservation (PANP) was assessed macroscopically and with the aid of intraoperative electrical stimulation of pelvic autonomic nerves (INS). Bladder function was evaluated with the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and the Quality of life index (Qol). Median follow-up was 20 months (range 3-40 months).Fo…
Eosinophil Cationic Protein in Nasal Secretions and Blood Serum in Grass-Pollen Allergic Rhinitis
1996
Concentration of the Eosinophil Cationic Protein (ECP) measured in different body fluids has been demonstrated to be a good marker of eosinophilic inflammation. In allergic asthma, ECP levels in both broncho-alveolar-lavage (BAL) fluid and serum can be used to monitor disease activity. In allergic rhinitis, the value of ECP determinations in serum and nasal secretions was not directly compared, so far. In the present study, ECP levels in blood serum (Se) and nasal secretions (NS) of grass pollen allergic and healthy individuals under pollen exposure were analyzed. Forty-three grass-pollen allergic subjects and 19 healthy volunteers were included. Grass-pollen counts were measured using Bur…
Antimicrobial Lubricant Did Not Reduce Infection Rate in Transrectal Biopsy Patients in a Large Randomized Trial Due to Low Complication Rates
2018
Abstract Background Transrectal prostate biopsy (pbx) is the most frequent outpatient procedure in the urological field. Septic complications are a major health issue. Objective To evaluate complication rates with or without an antimicrobial lubricant. Design, setting, and participants A total of 1000 patients received pbx between 2013 and 2015. Information about complications was collected by a 3-wk questionnaire. Return rate was 73.2% (n = 732). Intervention Randomization for pbx with the instillation of an antimicrobial lubricant (intervention group, n = 385) or the standard lubricant (control group, n = 347) was performed. Outcome measurements and statistical analysis Multivariable anal…
Predictive variables of spontaneous micturition recovery after acute urinary retention in men with benign prostatic enlargement: An observational pro…
2017
Objective: Acute urinary retention (AUR) is the sudden and painful inability to urinate spontaneously. AUR is one of the most significant complications of benign prostatic enlargement. The management of AUR is based on transurethral catheterization. Subsequent therapy is uncertain, but AUR seems to benefit from the use of alpha-blockers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the variables that could predict which patients would recover spontaneous micturition after trial without catheter. Methods: The present prospective observational study included men with AUR in an Italian tertiary care institute in 2016. Patients were catheterized and treated orally with fluoroquinolones, alpha-blockers…
